Despite its name, the USDA's largest program is not a farming program — it's SNAP (formerly food stamps), which provides nutrition assistance to approximately 42 million Americans, making it the nation's most important anti-hunger program. The department also administers the National School Lunch Program (feeding 30 million children daily), crop insurance, farm commodity subsidies, rural development loans, and the Forest Service, which manages 193 million acres of national forests and grasslands.
